To see all the images and read the whole letter, you might have to click “View entire message.” All images were taken by me, and I recorded the poem as a voice over. Have a listen!
When I went on a walk this week, on a rather mild and sunny January morning, I brought my camera and gave myself one rule: Each image I was going to take had to consist of three in-camera exposures with at least one image taken out of focus. Most of the images below consist of one in focus exposure layered with two out of focus exposures. I also zoomed in and out of the subjects in between each shot to get the desired effect of blur, layers, contrast, and a dream-like and abstract aesthetic. Some of the multiple exposure images are blended with each other in PS, making it six to nine layers in one image. These photographs are the black and white edition of this set. I will share some of the color images in a future post.
And then I wrote some words that came to me and fit with these images.
Beams of sunlight pass through,
soft, smooth, silky.
I am left with past promises.
Back lit prairie grass.
Flickers of light dancing like
fragmented memories of childhood tales.
Faint chimes of church bells,
a familiar sound from the past
lulling me to sleep.
Gently welcoming me into a dream
within a dream
within a dream.
A young girl without worries.
Eager, enthusiastic, empathetic.
Longing for far away places.
On top of the hill
a wooden bench once crowded.
Now empty.
With a silence this loud,
I woke up sooner than expected.
And everything had changed.
Items Of Note
Our next ‘Creative Hour’ is schedule for Saturday, February 22, 11 am CST. This Zoom session for paid subscribers is a wonderful opportunity to connect with each other no matter where you live. I encourage everyone to bring work to share, new and old, or share future ideas for projects. This is a time to ask questions, exchange ideas, receive feedback and suggestions in a non- pressure and casual environment.
Upcoming Workshop
My next three week online workshop “The Art Of Multiple Exposure” starts Tuesday, February 11. There is still time to register for it at Maine Media Workshops!
Gorgeous!
Such evocative images to accompany your poetry, Manuela. Beautiful work.
