There is a very small neighborhood across the river from mine, and it is close to downtown. It has old, colorful houses, big, plant-filled porches, and white picket fences. I hadn’t walked through it in a while and since everything is blooming right now, I decided to take a walk with my camera.
Summer in our city is beautiful. There is so much green and blooming flowers everywhere. It is peak season right now. At first I had to walk through my own neighborhood to get to the bridge that crosses the Mississippi river. I drive over that bridge nearly daily to get anywhere I need to get to. It takes a while to cross it by foot, but while walking, I enjoy the impressive view of downtown and the woods surrounding the river. I finally reach the other side and after a few more minutes, I turn right to enter a quiet part of the neighborhood on this side of the river where you can find hidden villas and quiet alleys that not many people seem to even know about.
I admire the picturesque porches and front yards filled with a vast array of flowers and hanging plants.
Inspired by
‘s and ’s recent collaboration, I decided to take in-camera double exposures.I focus on windows, house colors, flowers, plants, porches and fences, and try a variety of combinations. Sometimes, I feel a bit intrusive zooming in on a window from the outside and hope that nobody will question why I am walking around taking pictures of their house. But the beauty to me lies in the details.
It was a partly-cloudy day, which is my favorite for photographing outside, but also was quite humid. I walked for over an hour and at the end returned the same way I came, crossing the bridge back to my own familiar streets.
My summer mood definitely speaks color and texture right now. Come along with me and enjoy some of my views. There is one quadruple exposure in there. Can you figure it out?

Upcoming workshop on multiple exposure through Maine Media College
Exploring The Art Of Multiple Exposure Jul 22, 2025 - Aug 8, 2025
Join me for a three-week online workshop that delves into the world of creating multiple exposure images. This workshop is designed to expand your creative vision and elevate your photographic skills.
We begin this workshop with a step-by-step introduction to combining two or more images in Adobe Photoshop. You will learn to use blending modes, layer masks, and other tools and adjustments essential for creating multiple exposure. As you practice these techniques throughout the initial sessions, we will also explore creating multiple exposures in-camera and slowly build up to about ten exposures. Through experimentation with different settings and reviewing results, we will learn the advantages and disadvantages of both methods. Additionally, we will study the work of various photographers who employ multiple exposures in their art.
This is very fun class where the joy of experimentation and letting go of perfection is key.

These are magical. There's something so hypnotising about the layering. Gorgeous work, Manuela! I was trying to figure out which image had four layers. I thought it might be the first one or the other one of the house, 'favorite house', but it's very difficult to work out.
A pretty series that works for me! 💜
