A Brief, Complete Moment
Happiness doesn’t announce itself. It arrives in small moments, if you don’t let them pass too quickly. And when you do notice them - when you let them fully unfold - they linger, carrying you through the rest of the day.
I’m welcoming the month of May with open arms. Up here in the north, it means we can finally put the winter gear away. And somehow, that small act makes life feel lighter.
The days have turned bright in a way that feels almost exaggerated, as if the world is making up for lost time. The green of the grass and trees is impossibly vivid, heightened against a sky so blue it feels endless. Look at it long enough and it startles you, as if you had forgotten colors could be this alive, this saturated.
After months that felt heavy and gray and unrelenting, hope seems to have returned. Despite everything, nature keeps going, steadily unfolding as it should. There’s comfort in knowing something continues on its own rhythm, no matter what else is happening.
This week, happiness found me on one of my daily morning walks. On the surface, there was nothing unusual about it, just me and my dog heading out to one of those places where she can run freely, where the trails stretch out and we rarely cross paths with anyone else.
That morning, the sky was impossibly clear. There was still a trace of chill in the air, nothing uncomfortable, just a gentle reminder that this is only the beginning. A soft breeze moved through everything like a slow exhale. Birds were singing everywhere, the sound carrying easily through the open space.
We came to a wide field, and I let her off leash. She ran freely, cutting across the grass without hesitation, completely absorbed in her own joy.
And somewhere in that moment, watching her run, listening to the birds, with nothing remarkable happening, it was there: a brief but complete feeling of happiness. The kind you don’t need to hold onto because, for once, it feels like it might hold unto you.
Thank you, as always for being here!

I just love watching my dog run with unbridled joy - it always brings a smile to my face. We’re currently in Oregon, and as soon as he knows we’re walking to the beach his pace quickens and he keeps looking up at me with happiness in his eyes.
