Oh, such a wonderful post, and truly spectacular images from both of you. :) My 'Callahans' are masters like Rodney Smith, Vivian Mayer, Henri Cartier-Bresson and many more. But I just explored this subject in my love letter to Jonas Peterson. I think he was the one who made me dream I could do this for my living.

Thank you! And welcome to UNDONE! I don’t know Jonas Petersen and can’t wait to see more of his work. And, yes, Vivian Meier is a great inspiration of mine, too.

Dear Manuela, what a thoughtful post. I discovered Harry Callahan when his work was being exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, probably back in 2009. It was before I became obsessed with photography, but I remember being enchanted by his use of light and his collaboration with his wife/muse. I love where you went with the inspiration you took from him! Artists who inspire me are Cig Harvey, Lori Vrba, and Sal Taylor Kydd. Sal is a friend and was my teacher a few times over, and she’s the reason I started putting diptychs together. It all came from a book-making class I took with her and discussions about layouts, about how paired images should speak to each other, and the need for lots of white space. With those things in mind, I try to bring a fresh eye to my own images and the way I put them together into collages diptychs. Cig suggests spending enough time with our images to see what they have to tell us about ourselves. She inspired my color work. And Lori is a friend whom I find to be an infinite source of inspiration. She is both art and artist.

Thank you, Anne! Cig Harvey inspires me as well. Her color us is just astonishing! Sal is so inspiring. I love her style and her use of words. I would love to meet her someday. I don't know Lori Vrba, but I will check her out. Thank you for sharing!

Manuela, you got me at the mention of Harry Callahan - I'm a huge fan! In fact, "The additional f-stop" I created from one of his quotes.... I love what you wrote here, especially: "When we pay attention, we take all those influences and make space to create, experiment and practice, and we do so repeatedly. The result from that process will be an authentic piece of art, created with our own vision, inspired by many ideas." I want to do a better job of being patient enough to allow that process to happen organically - not to force it. I have seen what can happen when we pay attention and allow. Thank you for sharing this bit of inspiration!

Thanks! We all need to learn patience, at least I do. :)

Thanks Manuela for what was for me something of an introduction to Callahan. Though it seems like I have seen the influence of his art all around, even though I had not really explored the source. Much like the mysterious layers of Callahan's multi-exposures, your imaginative photography is a solid tribute, while branching off into something that is uniquely your own.
