I wondered if you have come across Jaume Llorens, who creates striking diptychs, also black and white, which seems so well suited to combining images. https://www.jllorens.com/

Yes. I do know his work. Funny enough, I was going to include him in this list, but the forgot.

His work is brilliant.

Your images are fantastic Manuela, so beautiful! I took a class when I first got interested in street photography and it was about storytelling. What stuck in my mind were two things: start with the strongest image and end with another strong one and... to vary scale unexpectedly. Now, if I can ever get started on this printing project, I can put this to task again!

Hi Juliette,

Thanks so much!

When you sequence a series, yes, starting strong and ending strong is what you should keep in mind. With diptychs and triptychs, it is more about recreating a new image out of old image, like finding the right puzzle pieces.

Great overview about something I have never done.I think I’ll buy a printer and print my photos and then combine them🤗

Yes, that is one way to do it! I prefer it myself.

Love this and thanks for the suggestion of other artists to study as I continue to practice curating and sequencing images as sets or series'.

You certainly have an eye for it.

BTW- do you have any preference / thoughts on even vs odd sets of images? I attended a talk given by a well-known NYC photography gallerist and he suggested only ever using odd numbers...3,5,7, etc...as it provides better "flow" as I remember him describing it.

Thank you! I hope you find someone that inspires you.

Interesting about the odd numbers. I personally have not heard about that, but I can definitely see it as something that could be good to do.

I think it depends on whether you sequence a whole series or combine images as diptychs, triptychs, and so on.

This is wonderful Manuela! Thank you for sharing your techniques. I am going to have to try out some triptyches. I have a sort of quintych (if that’s even what you’d call it) I was going to frame and hang up on my office wall. I admire what a great job you do with finding a way to create that sense of belonging among the images you choose for your tyches!!

Oh, I would love to see your quintych. (yeah, not sure about that word myself).

There are truly no creative limits to this method if combining images!
